Well, mine is the Twilight series, from the 2009 and 2010 Banned and/or Challenged List. Figures, right? Anyway, it has romance, action and quite frankly, I love it.

One of my favorite books is Duma Key by Stephen King. I would like to see the main character, Edgar Freemantle, played by Terry O'Quinn (Locke in Lost). It would make an excellent film!

Lord of Rage Royal House of Shadows Book 2

This book is an adult novel intended for adult readers. I try to keep my reviews rated PG, but the book definitely isn't!

When Osborn discovers Breena sleeping in her bed, he longs to finally touch the beautiful woman that has haunted his dreams for so long. And while Breena longs to be touched, she also needs Osborn for his warrior skills. Can Osborn squelch his desire for Breena long enough to give his princess every thing she wants, or will the passion they share overcome them both?

Lord of Rage is the second book in the Royal House of Shadows series, a wonderful collaboration between Gena Showalter, Jill Monroe, Jessica Anderson and Nalini Singh. It is the story of the children of Elden attempting to return to their home to avenge the deaths of their parents. This particular book had a very strong fairy tale feel to it, though definitely not a fairy tale for kids. I loved the characters in this story, in particular Breena, who overcame her gentile upbringing to become seriously tough! The romance and sexual tension in this book was perfectly balanced, giving just enough to leave you wanting more. Again, like Lord of the Vampires, this was a very steamy novel.

I am really enjoying these books. They are my little guilty pleasure. In a world that revolves around kids, husband, kids, work and kids, it’s nice to tune out the world and read a book that is meant to be fun and takes the edge off of a tough day. And who doesn’t love a book with a shirtless, good-looking guy on its cover?

Crossroads by Mary Ting Review and GIVEAWAY

Crossroads, the world between life and death, is a place no human has ever entered. That is, until Claudia. Now that Claudia has been to Crossroads through her dreams and learned the secret of the half-human, half-angels called alkins that reside there, she has to be protected. The fallen will be after her, certain she has the secret to destroying Crossroads. Claudia is assigned a guardian angel, Michael, to keep her safe from the fallen. But things between Claudia and Michael are not what they seem. In fact, nothing in Claudia’s life is what it seems.

Crossroads is a young adult paranormal romance, focusing on angels, demons and a group called the fallen.  It definitely has an intriguing and original plot, especially in a genre ripe with fallen angels, vampires and werewolves (all of which I love, by the way).  Unfortunately, I found it to be a bit formulaic. It reminded me too much of the Twilight series. There was a forbidden love, hot, burning passion, sexual tension and a friend that could potentially be a love interest—there was even a variation of the infamous leg hitch scene. There were many interesting aspects to the story: the alkins lives and why they are forced to live the way they do, Crossroads, Halo City and the Divine Ten Commandments.  I really wanted to learn more about these things. I also found the dialogue to be a little unrealistic; no teenager I know—and I know a lot—would talk the way the teenagers in this book talk. Also, Claudia’s constant internal dialogue became rather monotonous as the book progressed. I really wanted Ting to build the characters as she built the story. Both Claudia and Michael had tremendous potential, but they fell a bit flat. Some back story regarding the various characters in the story would have really helped the plot. Ting is extremely adept at building tension in her stories; the various fight scenes were well-written and exciting. During one scene in particular, in the retail store where Claudia works, I got goose bumps from the descriptions. I wanted the whole book to read like this scene. I fully expect Ting’s writing to take on even greater dimension as she progresses through Claudia’s story.        

I didn't dislike Crossroads, I was just a bit disappointed in it. I thought the plot was very original and well thought-out. Perhaps my expectations are too high or I am being too in harsh in comparing it to other books in the genre. After I finished the book, I checked out its reviews on Goodreads, and I am definitely in the minority. It has an average 4.10 out of 5 rating there. Banned Book Week September 24-October 1

Banned Books Week celebrates the right to have the freedom to read what we want, along with the value of freedom of speech found in the First Amendment. It brings attention to the harm of banning books by spotlighting censored books from across the country.


I am going to approach my post about banned books from the stand point of a mom (shocking, I know). I believe every parent has the right to decide what their own children read. Note, I said their own children. Just like every child is unique, every parent is unique. Just because someone does not like a book or believes that it is not appropriate for their child, does not mean I feel the same way. No one has the right to tell me how to parent my child, and that means no one has the right to tell me what my child can read. A parent who attempts to ban books is essentially telling me, and every other parent, that they know better than we do what is best for our children.


I strongly believe that books can provide a pathway to open and honest conversation between parents and children. Yes, there are books with "questionable" material--sex, drugs, violence, abuse, incest, and a million other things that could be considered inappropriate for children. But these things exist in our world, whether we like it or not, and whether we like it or not, our children may someday face these issues in their lives. I would rather my child has been able to have an open and honest conversation about any of these things, than face them without out any foreknowledge of whatever it may be. I would like those conversations to be with me or their father. This is in large part why I read the books they read. So I can have that open and honest conversation with them. No one has the right to take that away from me. And when books are banned, then that right is taken from me. I know that these parents who push to ban books because of their content, have their child's best interests in mind, but more often than not, they have not even read the entire book and they are being prejudicial and close-minded. I am not that parent. I will never try to take away someone's right to read, and I will fight to protect other's right to read.


Now excuse me, I am going to go read my favorite banned book, Twilight (a Top Ten Challenged Book in 2009 and 2010). Then I think I'll pick up Harry Potter (2001, 2002 and 2003).         

In My Mailbox (7)

In My Mailbox (IMM) was started over at the The Story Siren by Kristie and has evolved to more than 300 participating blogs.  It is a way for bloggers to network and socialize and to show everyone the various books that they received, either in the mail, from the library or from their local bookseller.  Postings may vary by blog, some bloggers post weekly, bi-weekly and so forth.
It was a pretty busy week around my house in the book department!

A week or so ago, I reviewed Lord of the Vampires. It was a fun, adult read. I don't read books like that very often, but I really enjoyed it. "Do you have a favorite series that you read over and over again? Tell us a bit about it and why you keep revisiting it?"


Ok, my answer is Twilight. I kind of cringed when I saw this question, because I know that there are a lot of people out there who "hate Twilight." And inevitably I get comments about how awful it is, how this it is, how that it is. Well, this is my blog and I am going to be honest. I love this series. I have read each book 7 times. And I feel like each time, I find something new. I never get tired of it. There is just something in this series of books that calls to me and pulls me in. I can't explain it, I don't even try. There is just something about this story I love. It's funny that this question came up, because I was just looking at my bookshelf yesterday (gazing at my 4 copies of each book I have) and thinking that I needed to re-read them. It's been too long. 


The newest series I have become enamored with is The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I love it! It gives me the same lost in another world feeling that I get when I read my Twilight books. I have read it twice, but I know that I will read it again and again.

Prom and Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg

Prom. Just the mere mention of the word causes fantasies of dresses and make-up and gorgeous up-dos, not to mention, boys. This is especially true if you are a student at the prestigious all-girls school, Longbourn Academy, where prom isn’t just a dance, it’s a life-altering event. But scholarship student Lizzie Bennet isn’t interested in all the hoopla that goes along with prom; she just wants to fly under the radar and finish out her time at Longbourn. But thanks to her friend Jane’s new romance with Pemberley Academy’s Charles Bingley, Lizzie finds herself pulled into the chaos. Unfortunately, Charles’ best friend Will Darcy pushes every button Lizzie has, and then some. Darcy is a self-centered, pompous jerk who dislikes Lizzie because her family has no money. Or does he? Lizzie learns some hard lessons as she discovers maybe people shouldn’t be judged so quickly.

Prom and Prejudice is a delightful, fun read that actually teaches a lesson along the way. It proves the adage “when you assume, you make an a** out of you and me.”  Or “you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover,” a boy by his money or a girl by her lack of money. Eulberg’s book is a clever homage to the beloved classic, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, even using familiar character names. I had a lot of fun reading this book and the time flew by as I rushed to the end.  I was anxious to discover the truth about Darcy and Wick; and I needed to know if Lizzie could overcome her prejudices long enough to see the real boy beneath the money and attitude.

I really liked this book; it was interesting and uncomplicated fun right to the very end. It also made me want to pull out my dusty copy of Pride and Prejudice. I think my girls would enjoy the book as well. And hopefully, it will make them want to check out the classic as well.

I really just tell it like it is. Who I am--married mom of 3, what I do--school, work and support my girls in marching band and why I blog--to encourage other parents to read what their children read. And I do say I love to read, which I know is probably a given, but I still like to mention it.

I have two answers to this question. First, since I'm a creepy, overly obsessed Twilight mom, any of the Twilight books would suffice. I love the Cullens and I want to meet them. Alice could be my best friend and Emmett could be my big brother. And then there's Edward......Secondly, I would love for the Mortal Instrument books to be reality. I love the world of the Shadowhunters and I would like to see it first hand!

Nor did he expect to feel an inexplicable craving for Jane, one he cannot seem to stop.

Lord of the Vampires was a fun read, as well as a great start to the Royal House of Shadows series. I am not really familiar with Gena Showalter’s previous work, but if this book is any indication, it is hot, hot, hot. As was this book. This was definitely an adult book meant for mature readers. I would not recommend it for readers under the age of 18. But if a fun, adult book is what you are looking for, this is a good place to start. It was nice to read a book that takes the sexual tension further than just tension! Check this out if you are looking for a good read with an interesting story.

Firelight by Sophie Jordan

She must hide her true dragon nature and constantly hide from those who would kill her and her kind, those known only as “the hunters.” They can never know about the draki ability to hide in human form, it is her race’s greatest defense. But when Jacinda breaks the rules—again—she pushes the pride and its elders to their breaking point. In order to protect Jacinda from an unbelievably cruel punishment, her mother sneaks her and her twin sister away in the middle of the night. Now, forced to live in the smoldering desert heat, away from the cooling mountain mists, she must try to adapt to being human all the time, while also suffering the withering away of her draki side. But when Will enters her life, gorgeous, elusive Will, Jacinda’s draki side comes to life, nourished and whole. And the more time she spends with him, the stronger her draki side stays. Jacinda is drawn to Will and inexplicably Will is drawn to her. But he has a secret, too. Will is a hunter. And Jacinda is his prey.

I feel like a broken record the last few reviews, but this was an incredibly unique story. In a genre filled with vampires, werewolves and witches (just to name a few), Firelight offers a refreshing twist to the paranormal genre. When I first read what this book was about—descendants of dragons that live as humans—I had my doubts as to how such a story could be pulled off. Well, Sophie Jordan pulled it off fantastically. The world she has created, the world of the draki, is flat-out amazing. Every fiber of my being itches to learn more about the draki:  their lives, their abilities, their past and even their enemies. Jordan’s incredible writing skills make their world come screaming to life. I could not get enough! Jacinda is the perfect heroine, beautiful, intelligent and unaware of how incredible she is, which makes her even more appealing. While her mom and her sister drive me crazy, they are the perfect foils to Jacinda—they want normalcy and a life away from the draki, the opposite of what Jacinda wants.  And move over Edward Cullen and Jace Wayland, you have some serious competition in Will!  To quote my teenage girls—OMG! Will is gorgeous, conflicted and elusive, and he is willing do anything for Jacinda. And quite frankly, I could get lost in those gorgeous eyes of his!

As you have probably guessed, I really loved this book.  I cried, I laughed and I sat spellbound throughout most of this book. I only have two complaints. First, I am dying to know more about the draki and second, I need to know what happens next. Thank goodness I don’t have to wait, seeing as how the sequel came out on September 6^th. Vanish, here I come!  

Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

It seems just about everyone loves to read stories about the mythological world. But what if the things we consider the preternatural—beyond what is normal or natural—was actually a possibility, a normal way of life?  Things like zombies, dragons and hellhounds roam the streets, are studied in school and live in zoos. Some of these creatures are even considered endangered and it’s illegal to kill or hunt them.  This is the world Kali D’Angelo lives in, a world where Darwin found more than he ever imagined possible while sailing on the HMS Beagle. But Kali isn’t your everyday normal girl either. Every other day, she is more than human, with an overwhelming instinct to hunt and destroy the preternatural creatures every one else regards as a normal part of life.  Kali has no idea why it happens or even what she really is; she just knows what she must do. Then one day, a day when she is just human, Kali sees a mark on a cheerleader, a mark that means she will be dead within hours, thanks to one of those protected preternatural creatures. Kali is not sure she can help, not when she’s normal, but she’ll risk it all to try.

At the risk of sounding clichéd, this book grabbed me on page one and took me on a ride I never would have expected.  It is an exceedingly well-written, thrill-a-minute novel, full of unexpected surprises, great characters and a fantastically original story. I totally fell for this book and the people in it—Kali, Skylar and her brothers, and even the ice queen, Bethany. And who would have thought I could fall for Zev, even though all I heard was his voice for most of the book? This book gives a twist to all those old stories of kelpies, hellhounds and zombies; it pulls them into the real world and forces us to look at them anew. I for one will never look at zombies quite the same again.

I absolutely loved this book and I highly recommend it to everyone. I will be picking up a copy for my girls once it is released. I will also be checking out some of Jennifer Lynn Barnes other novels, because if Every Other Day was this awesome, I expect the others must be pretty good, too. And Ms. Barnes, if you happen to read this, could you tell me if there will be a sequel? I would love to read some more about Zev!

This week's question:

“Many of us primarily read one genre of books, with others sprinkled in. If authors stopped writing that genre, what genre would you start reading? Or would you give up reading completely if you couldn’t read that genre anymore?”

 

I would never, ever give up reading! I consider myself a pretty eclectic reader as it is, though recently, I have been leaning toward the paranormal genre (adult and young adult). So, I guess if authors stopped writing that one, I would read just about anything else I could get my hands on.

Nope, never. I can't recall any villan I have ever liked enough to want them to "win" at the end. There have been a few that I felt sympathetic toward, but never enough to want them to win.

My teaser:

I was tired, I was light-headed, and all I wanted was to go to sleep and bring on the dawn, but I knew with sudden prescience that it wasn't going to happen. I wasn't going to be able to stop thinking about it, any of it--not about my dad, or the thing inside of me, or the fact that somewhere out there, someone was looking for me.
